The book is a collection of poems by world-renowned Filipino poet, Rolando A. Carbonell. He has received numerous awards for his works including the Pride of Malay Race Award for Poetry.
The title poem talks about a lost love, longing, and the desire to rekindle the flame. It has become one of the most beloved love poems of all time, spanning generations of readers in the Philippines and all over the world.
Having met the man and spent a good many hours on several occasions talking about his poetry and his journey into the discovery of his spirit, one will be instantly taken in by his soft-spoken words and gentle manner.
This man exudes love in many levels and inspires a lot of aspiring poets to never stop believing in themselves and to always listen to the heart and the spirit for you will always be guided to the right direction when you take heed of what they are whispering to you.
Beyond Forgetting
For a moment I thought I could forget you.
For a moment I thought I could still the restlessness in my heart.
I though the past could no longer haunt me – nor hurt me.
How wrong I was!
For the past, no matter how distant, is as much a part of me as life itself.
And you are part of that life. You are so much a part of me — of my dreams, my early hopes, my youth and my ambitions – that in all tasks I can’t help remembering you.
Many little delights and things remind me of you. Yes, I came. And would my pride mock my real feelings? Would the love song, the sweet and lovely smile on your face, be lost among the deepening shadows?
I have wanted to be alone. I thought I could make myself forget you In silence and in song… And yet I remembered.
For who could forget the memory of the once lovely, the once beautiful, the once happy world such as ours?
I came because the song that I kept through the years is waiting to be sung. I cannot sing it without you. The song when sung alone will lose the essence of its tune, because you and I had been one.
I have wanted this misery to end, because it is part of my restlessness. Can’t you understand? Can’t you divine the depth and tenderness of my feelings towards you?
Yes, can’t you see how I suffer in this even darkness without you?
You went away because you mistook my silence for indifference. But silence, my dear, is the language of my heart.
How could I essay the intensity of my love when silence speaks a more eloquent tone? But perhaps, you didn’t understand…
Remember, I came, because the gnawing loneliness is there and will be lost until the music is sung, until the poem is heard, until the silence is understood…until you come to me again.
For you alone can blend music and memory into one consuming ecstasy. You alone…

I had a copy of this book in my high school days but i lost it. I’m 61 now so it was a long time ago. I really love the poem at that time that i even memorized it by heart.. and that after the last line… You alone.. I dont know where i got this but i added this: You alone my dearest.. Beyond forgetting will not help.. Beyond forgetting means death.. Loving you is the only consolation I’d bring to my grave…

My Nanay owned a copy of this book when she was still unmarried. When I was in my elementary grades to my high school, I would usually read from its pages. I fell in love with Lyric Poetry and have shared it with my students in my early years of teaching… Seeing this blog makes me wonder where Nanay’s book is now. But I doubt it is still with her at her home…Yolanda or even previous typhoons might have destroyed it already. I would want to have a new copy of it, too, to share to my growing children.

This poem holds a big place in my heart! My boyfriend in college gave me a copy and it was in my possession until someone borrowed it and was never returned. It was well written and heart- wrenching of one’s true love. Reading it once again brought memories of past that brought back past to present. A man so in love is rare, precious and refreshing that it does and can exists! Lucky is the woman that is the recipient of such great love! I write poetry as well and this is one great one that truly expresses the poet’s innermost emotion.

Last month, while hanging out by the beach with my father, brothers, and sister-in-law, my father recited this poem to us from memory! It was my first time to hear that poem, and it pierced my heart. I found it sad yet so beautiful! Oh, how amazing it is that a poem can touch the hearts of different generations!
Please let me know how I can get a copy of the book. I would love to give it as a gift to my father–a man who recites poetry to his children! Please let me know via e-mail, too. Thank you!

I am confused. It says here that Dr. Carbonell’s wife is Tita Duran, who is well known as the wife of Pancho Magalona. For all I knew, his wife is the late Letty Liboon, a kundiman singer. Which one is correct?
farrah vlasov
Jul 30, 2013 @ 09:54:56
Dr. Carbonell never said nor wrote that his wife is tita duran. Tita was one of his ‘inspirations and crushes’ among others, then when he was writing the poems. Tita is married to Pancho Magalona, Dr Carbonell is married to Letty Liboon.

I did never know that a Beyond Forgetting book existed. I was blinded by what I thought was an anonymous author of this beautiful poetry. Our Literature teacher in third year high school taught us this poem way back in 1974-75. And since then I fell in love with it reciting it every once in a while in my solitude that until now I still remember every line of it. Just recently my teacher who is now in the U.S. asked me to send him a copy of the poem, which I sent via fb immediately. He said that it would have been better if he can also have a copy of the female version(answer) of the poem. I tried to search the web and encountered this page but could not find the female version. I hope somebody can give me a copy of it.

I am also overjoyed to have found this bloc. I am a 70 year old Thai woman married to a Filipino man who passed away two years ago. My husband was a great fan and quoted often from the poems of Mr. Rolando Carbonell. I was in the Philippines last week for a niece’s wedding and decided to look around for Mr. Carbonell’s books of poems but was unsuccessful. So upon arriving back home, I started my search on the internet and found this site.

i got acquanited with the book ‘beyond forgetting’ by rolando carbonnel in 1967-1971 when an uncle bought a copy. he requested me to write love letters to girls he courted and the book was a valuable source of inspiration. carbonnel’s poems also influenced me a lot about old-fashioned romance where ladies are adored, revered and loved; they’re not considered objects of man’s possessiveness and lust; by the way, there was a sequel to the book, and this was titled ‘beloved’, which is equally romantic. i’ve been searching for copies of these two books for the last 40 years; i’d like to introduce these to my grandchildren who are approaching their teens, just to show them how our generation, through mr cabonell’s poetry, loved (and also lost!) and adored. more power to you and we are very grateful for this remembrance and would appreciate very much if you can inform us where to get copies, if there any available, of these memorable books. again, my thanks!!!

Hi Nila!
Apologies for this rather late reply… I, too, hope that the book gets published again.
Keeping my fingers crossed on this one.. 😉
I hope to see more of you here — once I’ve updated my entries, of course! 😉

It’s sad and beautiful… it kind of wrenches your heart just by imagining how it would feel if you were in the author’s shoes, doesn’t it?

I know what you mean. If the author hadn’t given me a copy, I wouldn’t have this book myself.
It’s sad that a good number of great Filipino writers are being overlooked and neglected in place of the more “money-making” books. 😦 It’s pop culture all over again…

Do you know where I can buy Rolando Carbonell’s books? My grandmother is looking for Beyond Forgetting, Echoes of the Heart & Beloved.
Thanks!

Hi Nikki,
The books I have were given by the author himself. 😀 Unfortunately, I haven’t seen any of his books in National Bookstore [Shame!], but I could be mistaken. 🙂
Anyway, Beyond Forgetting was printed by Kadena Press Foundation-Asia, Inc. I don’t know their number though. 😦
Their address is 98 Kalayaan Avenue, Central Diliman, Quezon City. Hope this helps. 😉

Glad to know you’re familiar with it.. 🙂 Mr. Carbonell is actually a very kind, gentle man.. I had the opportunity to sit with him on many occasions because I moved within his circle for awhile. 🙂
